What the program covers

The areas of learning that make up the program will take you and your team on a journey which will see them gain real skills, appreciate the power of participation, and gain confidence as facilitators and facilitative leaders.

How the program is delivered

The program comprises six learning areas, spaced 4-8 weeks apart, delivered either face-to-face or virtually. These are:

1

Group Facilitation Methods 3 days (or six half days online)

This learning area equips you with a strong grounding in the essentials of group facilitation and Māori perspectives on facilitation. It includes instruction and hands-on practice with the core Technology of Participation™ (ToP™) methods – the Focused Conversation Method and Consensus Workshop Method, and planning to facilitate.

Strategic Thinking and Planning 3 days (or six half days online)

This learning area focuses on participatory planning and ways you can effectively engage a group in thinking strategically. It applies the core ToP™ techniques learned in Group Facilitation to the task of strategic planning in a way that achieves whole-group participation. Further variations on the methods for both gathering and processing information are taught. Māori perspectives on strategic thinking and planning are explored, and aspects relating to work in other cultural contexts are covered.

Understanding Diverse Value Systems 3 days (or six half days online)

This learning area builds facilitation and leadership skills for working effectively with difference – appreciating and embracing very different ways of thinking, learning and communicating. It builds appreciation of how diversity can be a source of strength in a group, and tools to make the most of this. It provides insights into how people view the world, and how facilitators can recognise and respond to where a group is at, leading effective transitions and change.

Principled Influencing and Negotiating 3 days (or six half days online)

This learning area builds dialogue skills for one-on-one and group work, within a context of respecting the uniqueness of each person and developing as a facilitative leader. Māori perspectives and dimensions that relate to this are explored. Through hands-on activities you will refine your dialogue skills in way that enables you to work more effectively with different needs and interests, transform conflict in a group, and develop agreement and commitment.

Understanding and Leading Change 2.5 days (or five half days online)

This learning area equips you with the skills to co-design change, recognising the ‘significant value add’ participatory approaches enable in a change situation. It explores both Western and Māori theories and methods relating to change, and builds skills for designing change interventions and how, as facilitative leaders, we can support people through change.

Being a Facilitative Leader 2.5 days (or five half days online)

This learning area explores what distinguishes a facilitative leader and the power of facilitative leadership in unleashing potential in others. It equips you with an understanding of the characteristics of a facilitative leader, and Māori perspectives in relation to these, and a plan for your ongoing self-development.
